How to Appear in Google AI Overviews: An AEO Guide for Dubai Businesses
SEO & AI SEARCH
DUBAI & UAE
GUIDE
Oct 2, 2026
If you want to know how to appear in Google AI Overviews, start with an uncomfortable fact: there is no separate trick. AI Overviews have been live in the UAE since May 2025, and AI Mode has answered questions in Modern Standard Arabic since October 2025. Many local searches can now end in a generated answer with a short list of cited links.
This guide is for founders and marketing leads at Dubai businesses who want to be one of those links. It explains how Google’s AI features choose sources, what Google itself confirms, which AEO tactics you can ignore, and how the same groundwork helps you get cited by ChatGPT. The timeline in the region:
AI Overviews in MENA (May 2025)
Announced at Google I/O, with Arabic support from launch.
AI Mode in English (August 2025)
A separate conversational tab in Google Search, rolled out across the region.
AI Mode in Arabic (October 2025)
Modern Standard Arabic added as one of 36 new languages.
Your content now competes to be summarised and cited, not only to rank, and the work that earns citations also strengthens your classic rankings.

What AI Overviews and AI Mode Are, and How They Pick Sources
Both features sit inside Google Search and both draw on Google’s index. The difference is in how people use them.
AI Overviews
An AI Overview is a generated summary shown above the regular results when Google’s systems judge it helpful, typically for how, why and comparison questions. It is short, it links to a small set of supporting pages, and the classic results remain underneath.
AI Mode
AI Mode is a separate tab for exploratory, multi-part questions. Users can ask by text, voice or image and keep refining with follow-ups. Google explains that both features may use a “query fan-out” technique, running several related searches across subtopics before composing a response, and that the two may use different models, so their answers and links vary.
AI Overviews
A summary block inside a normal results page, shown for selected queries, with organic results below.
AI Mode
A conversational tab with longer answers and follow-up questions, built on the same index.
ChatGPT search
A separate system run by OpenAI, with its own crawler and its own rules for inclusion.
AEO vs SEO vs Generative Engine Optimisation: What Actually Changed
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO) are industry labels for work aimed at AI-generated answers. In May 2026 Google published a dedicated guide to optimising for its generative AI features, and it is explicit: from Google Search’s perspective, this work is still SEO.
That does not make the labels meaningless. Three things genuinely changed:
The shape of the query
People ask longer, more specific questions, and AI features break them into sub-questions.
The unit of visibility
Being cited inside an answer now matters alongside ranking position.
Measurement
AI features have their own reporting in Search Console, and AI assistants send traffic you can tag and track.
What did not change is the foundation: an indexable site, content that answers real questions better than the alternatives, and a business that other credible sources talk about.
How to Appear in Google AI Overviews: Seven Steps
Google states that pages need no special optimisation for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond SEO fundamentals. These are the fundamentals that matter most for being cited.
1. Make sure the page is indexed and snippet-eligible
To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Check the page with Search Console’s URL Inspection tool, confirm that robots.txt and any CDN or firewall rules allow Googlebot, and review your robots meta tags. A nosnippet directive or a very restrictive max-snippet value limits how your content can be used.
2. Answer the question directly, early on the page
Put a clear, self-contained answer near the top: a two- or three-sentence definition, a direct recommendation or a short list, then expand. This gives Google’s systems an unambiguous passage to summarise and link to. It does not mean breaking the page into fragments; Google says chunking content is unnecessary.
3. Cover the follow-up questions buyers ask next
Because of query fan-out, one question about choosing a clinic management system in Dubai may trigger related searches on cost, integrations, data hosting and support. Pages that address those natural follow-ups give Google more reasons to cite them. List the questions your sales team hears every week and answer them on the relevant pages.
4. Publish non-commodity, first-hand expertise
Google asks for helpful, reliable, people-first content that offers value beyond what is already widely available. An article that restates what every competitor says gives an AI feature no reason to cite you. Original process detail, local regulatory context, real project experience and clear authorship do.
5. Keep the technical foundations clean
AI features rely on the same crawling and indexing as classic search. Important content should exist as text rather than inside images, pages should load quickly and work well on mobile, and internal links should make every key page easy to reach. If your current site makes this difficult, the fix is usually in the build, which is where performance-focused web development in Dubai pays off.
6. Keep your Google Business Profile accurate
For local and service queries, Google advises keeping Business Profile information current. A consistent name, address, phone number, opening hours and service categories help Google connect your website to a real, verifiable business. It is the same groundwork behind effective local SEO in Dubai.
7. Build an English and Arabic footprint
AI Overviews support Arabic, and AI Mode added Modern Standard Arabic in October 2025. If your customers search in Arabic, English-only content limits where you can be cited. Properly localised Arabic pages, rather than raw machine translation, widen the set of questions your business can appear for.
AI Mode SEO: Writing for Longer, Conversational Queries
AI Mode SEO rests on the same foundations, but the queries look different. Google reports that people ask noticeably longer questions in AI Mode than in a traditional search box, then refine them through follow-ups.
Three adjustments help. Write for the whole decision, not just the head term: criteria, constraints and trade-offs. State context explicitly, such as location, industry and who an option suits. And keep pages current, because a reader comparing options will spot stale details quickly.
How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and Other AI Assistants
ChatGPT is not Google and runs its own search systems. Good practice overlaps heavily, but one technical step is easy to miss.
Let OpenAI's search crawler in
OpenAI states that any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, provided it does not block OAI-SearchBot, the crawler behind ChatGPT’s search features. Sites that opt out are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they may still appear as navigational links. Training is controlled separately through GPTBot, so you can allow search visibility while declining model training. Check robots.txt as well as firewall and bot-protection rules, which can block crawlers without anyone noticing.
LLM visibility for brands: earn genuine mentions
Assistants form a picture of your business from the wider web, not only your own site. A clear, consistent description of what you do, coverage in reputable local publications, accurate directory listings and genuine client reviews all make your brand easier to describe correctly. Google explicitly warns against pursuing inauthentic mentions.
AEO Tactics You Can Skip
Google’s 2026 guide is unusually direct about what its generative AI features do not need. For Google Search, you can deprioritise:
llms.txt files
Content chunking
AI-specific rewrites
Special schema or Markdown pages
Inauthentic mentions
Two nuances matter. An llms.txt file does no harm and other services may use it, but Google Search ignores it. Structured data is not required for AI features, yet valid schema still earns rich results in classic search, so keep it where it already serves a purpose.
How to Measure AI Search Visibility
Search Console now includes a Generative AI performance report showing how your content performs in Google’s AI features. Use it to see which pages surface, and for which queries.
For ChatGPT, OpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links from its search results, so those visits appear as a distinct source in Google Analytics. Track enquiries from both channels, not just sessions: a citation that never produces a lead is visibility, not growth.

FAQs About Appearing in AI Overviews
AEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
SEO covers everything that helps a site get found in search. AEO focuses on being used as a source inside AI-generated answers. Google treats this work as part of SEO, so the two should run as one strategy rather than separate projects.
Is generative engine optimisation the same as AEO?
Largely, yes. Both terms describe work aimed at AI-generated responses, and the industry uses them loosely. The underlying work, from crawlability to authoritative content, is shared.
Does schema markup help you appear in AI Overviews?
Google says special schema is not required for its generative AI features. Valid structured data still supports rich results in classic search, so it remains worthwhile where it describes your content accurately.
Do AI Overviews and AI Mode work in Arabic in the UAE?
Yes. AI Overviews launched across MENA with Arabic support in May 2025. AI Mode launched in English in the region in August 2025 and added Modern Standard Arabic that October.
Can I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?
Yes, through the same preview controls used for regular snippets, such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet. Restricting snippets also affects how the page appears in classic results, so weigh the trade-off carefully.
